Under the Hood: How Does It Work Without Jailbreak?

How can a desktop tool modify system-level Apple Wallet card graphics on a secure, sandboxed operating system without jailbreak?

AirCard leverages the airlift sandbox escape exploit developed by security researcher 0xjohnny (@0xjohnnydev). The exploit targets the AirTraffic (ATAirlock) sync protocol used between iOS and macOS Finder/iTunes, allowing the host machine to write custom assets directly into shared container caches.

The critical concept to understand is the architectural separation between Display Assets and Cryptographic Payment Rails:

• Secure Payment Layer (Untouchable): The Device Account Number (DAN / DPAN), dynamic cryptograms, and biometrics (Face ID / Touch ID) are sealed inside Apple's Secure Enclave and Secure Element. No desktop USB utility or sync exploit can access or manipulate this hardware layer.
• Visual Skin Layer (Local Cache): What you see on screen when opening Apple Wallet is simply a cached PNG bitmap indexed by card hash. AirCard replaces only this static graphical asset.

Customizing your cards takes less than five minutes:

Step 1: Download & Install AirCard

Visit the official AirCard GitHub Releases page (github.com/mak5er/AirCard/releases) and download the latest AirCard.dmg.

Mount the DMG file and drag AirCard.app into your macOS Applications folder.

Step 2: Connect iPhone to Mac & Trust Computer

Connect your iPhone to your Mac via USB. Unlock your iPhone screen and tap "Trust This Computer" when prompted, entering your passcode. Open AirCard, and your device details will be detected at the top of the window.

Step 3: Scan & Identify Your Target Card

In AirCard, navigate to the Wallet Cards tab and click Scan Cards.

Pick up your iPhone and perform the following sequence:

1. Double-click the Side (Power) button to invoke Apple Pay;
2. Authenticate with Face ID or Touch ID;
3. Tap the specific card you wish to customize (tap between cards if you have multiple).

AirCard will instantly read the card hash from the system log stream and generate a card mockup slot on your Mac screen!

Step 4: Assign Artwork & Fine-Tune Framing

Click on the detected card slot or simply drag & drop your image file onto the card canvas. Use the built-in controls to pan, zoom, and ensure the artwork looks balanced.

Step 5: Click Flash Skins

Once you are satisfied with the preview, click Flash Skins. AirCard will transfer the artwork into the device cache via airlift in a few seconds.

On your iPhone, swipe up into the App Switcher, force-close the Wallet app, and reopen it. If the new skin does not immediately display, a quick device reboot will reload the SpringBoard assets!

Bonus: Lock Screen Passcode Themes (.passthm)

AirCard also includes a comprehensive passcode theming suite:

1. Importing Themes: Switch to the Passcode Themes tab and drag & drop any .passthm file into the window to see a live preview on keys 0–9, *, and #.

How to Revert Back to Default Bank Artwork

Want to restore your card's original bank design?

1. Overwrite with New Skin: You can flash any new artwork over an existing skin at any time.
2. Clean Bank Reset: Open the Wallet app on iPhone, select the card, tap the info icon, scroll down, and tap "Remove Card". Re-add the card via Apple Pay. The system will cleanly re-download the original high-resolution artwork from Apple and issuer servers.
